Dr. Wiele Answers Questions About Orthodontic Problems

 |
"Dr. Wiele, what causes orthodontic problems?"
|
| |
Most orthodontic problems
are inherited, including tooth size and jaw size, and may lead to
crowding of teeth, spacing of teeth, overbites, and underbites.
This is why we advocate early examination and intervention, as young
as 4 or 5 years of age, but generally around 6-8 years of age. If
one waits until age 12 or 13 when most of the development is over,
the options of treatment are greatly reduced.
The good news is that today, even severe cases
that were formerly surgical cases, can be treated non-surgically and
often without extractions. This depends on how much growth
potential is left in the child. By harnessing the growth of one
bone and accelerating the growth of a complementary bone, the growth
process can be resynchronized.

"What
habits contribute to bad bites?"
|
| |
A number of childhood habits can lead to
orthodontic problems, such as
thumb or finger sucking, sucking on a pacifier, sucking on a lip, mouth
breathing (often caused by enlarged tonsils and adenoids), fingernail
biting, and "tongue thrust".
