"Dr. Wiele, how are TMJ disorders caused?" TMJ
disorders are caused primarily by trauma. The two types of trauma are
macro-trauma (acute trauma) and micro-trauma (chronic trauma). Acute trauma includes injuries like a blow to the face or jaw. These problems are often rectified by stabilization until healing has occurred, being very similar to injuries like a sprained ankle or a broken bone. Chronic traumas have a broader range of causes that require a slower approach for healing. If a condition takes a long time to develop, it usually demands a longer time for healing and may not heal to 100% of pre-injury capacity. A medical parallel would be the fact that some people need joint, artery, or organ replacements, because the injury is incapable of complete healing. An often overlooked cause of chronic micro-trauma is the slow wearing away of supportive and functional tooth structure through the process of dental attrition. Regardless of the type of trauma, relief of pain can usually be accomplished in short order.
